Lifespan

In addition to the disintegration of the tritium (12.3 years half-life value), the lifespan of a trigalight depends on additional, differing factors.

Half-life time of tritium
halbwertzeit
a = years
Of importance for example, is the chemical quality (composition) of the coating and of the luminous substance used.
A qualitatively inferior production process (contamination, leakage) can lead to massive losses of brightness within a very short period of time.
The reduction in brightness of our mb-microtec ag trigalight is approx.
10 % per year. Nevertheless, this does not occur on a linear time scale and is further influenced by the geometrical shape of the light source.
The term lifespan is somewhat unfortunate when applied to trigalight, since a qualitatively superior light source can still be bright, even after more than 20 years.

Often, a contract calls for a specific level of brightness after a certain time. In such cases a customer can consult with mb-microtec ag and it can usually be determined if specific performance can be guaranteed. In any case, we manufacture our trigalight according to the parameters established in the “British Standard” and all of our sources come with a minimum 10 year performance guarantee.

Half-life of tritium
Long-term study on the decrease in brightness of painted and unpainted trigalight®.

*The partial application of white paint to the outside of the trigalight maximizes the light output thru the unpainted part of the trigalight surface. This focused and increased performance also explains, as the graphic shows, why on a percentage bases the early loss of brightness is higher on a painted trigalight.
